1971 Lincoln Continental

1971 Lincoln Continental Sedan

Finding a superbly maintained, full-size luxury Lincoln from the early 70s, top-maintained, first-hand, with low mileage requires a lot of patience and luck!

Unfortunately, these beautiful designer pieces went unappreciated for decades. Their value and quality have now been discovered.

This one comes from William Luplow of Akron, Ohio. It has a well-maintained 65,000 miles. It features a great color combination: light green (very rare) with a perfect green vinyl roof and green fabric interior, so much more elegant and beautiful than leather.

The Lincoln is a beautiful survivor, having been stored in the garage for over 20 years. It remained there under cover until the house, built in 1943, was vacated after the death of the owner, William Luplow's son. He never sold the car. His grandson then did, and that's when I came into play.

As so often in recent years, we first inspected its mechanical condition.

The engine was in very good condition, with no damages after long term storage. Even the exhaust is still in good condition!

Things weren't looking so good for the three "wet" components:

Fuel system: The tank and fuel were completely rotten; the fuel pump, lines, and carburetor were replaced or overhauled.

Brake system: Solid and rotten, completely overhauled with new brake calipers, pads, brake cylinders, hoses, lines, master cylinder, and the brake unit.

Cooling system: Also in need; new radiators, hoses, water pump, and the heater unit for the automatic air conditioning were also repaired.

Whitewall tires were badly cracked and were replaced. Ignition system overhauled: ignition coil, cables, spark plugs, distributor, and conversion to a maintenance-free, contactless ignition system (standard only from 1973).

A major inspection with replacement of all fluids, V-belts, windshield wiper rubbers, etc. were also necessary.

Unfortunately, the first original paint on the rear of the hood and parts of the side panels had suffered, so these parts were repainted.

Details such as a working clock and electrically adjustable seat, as well as the rare cruise control and rear window blower, have also been repaired.

After an extensive test phase, it drives as well as it should: fantastic!
